FYR: Working conditions, sexism drive women from engineering

Graphic from the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). I think I need to find more ways to feature Rosie.

My sister, who is an engineer, sent this to me yesterday: Working conditions drive women from engineering, UWM survey says

I can’t tell you how many times she has complained about men in the engineering industry not taking her seriously or patronizing her because she is a woman.  This point is proved by the article.  Yes, the results are nothing we didn’t already know, if you know a few women in engineering.  It is really sad that it’s these kind of frustrations that are causing women to leave.  Some say they leave because of families, but if their jobs were so wonderful to begin with, wouldn’t they want to come back?  I know this isn’t the case everywhere, but the fact that sexism is not just a reason, but a MAJOR reason why women quit the field is frustrating and unacceptable.

Even more disgusting than the results of the study, are the comments that accompany the article, with a few responders trivializing sexism and saying that women should suck it up.  Keep thinking that way, Mr. Caveman.  In 20 years, there is a good chance your boss will be wearing a skirt.
